Positive and Negative language
Positive phrasing and language has the following qualities:
•It tells the recipient what can be done
•It suggests alternatives and choices available to the recipient
•It sounds helpful and encouraging rather than bureaucratic
•It generates more involvement as it sound friendly not hostile
Negative phrasing and language often have the following characteristics:
•It tells the recipient what cannot be done.
•It has a tone of blame, like it’s the person you’re talking to’s fault.
•It includes words like can't, won't, unable to, that tell the recipient what you cannot do.
•It appears hostile and unengaging, like you don’t want to communicate with the person.
When involved in a conversation you should try and show the person you’re communicating with that you are listening to them. I they are talking in long sentences in detail you should atleast nod so they know you are still paying attention instead of them stopping and asking, ‘Are you listening?’
Alternatively you could summarise what you’re going to be talking about so people can get an understanding of what you’re going to be saying giving them an insight.
